ipv6

We (the ISP engieers team) have been implementing ipv6 in the network for some time now. Now, we are very much familiar with ipv6 and would like to have a open discussion on the subject.

Once you get accustomed, ipv6 is a much more easier technology than its predecessor.

Right now, the lack of demand for ipv6 services, is holding us back. And then there is this Non-Backward compatibility of ipv6. Multi-homing is another nightmare!

I ave a created simple labs to experiment with. All you need is some WindowsXP machines and a router than can do ipv6.

You can have a tunnel broker account for free to connect with the actual ipv6 internet. Try Hurricane Electric tunnel broker service at http://ipv6.he.net/

I'm using Dialog Broadband and Lanka Bell broadband (both Wi-MAX). I have implemented a 6to4 tunnels for both. I can access www.ipv6.sltnet.lk or any of the LEARN addresses via IPv6 when I try through Lanka Bell but not through Dialog Broadband.

Bellow you'll find the traceroute output. If you want me to do anymore debugging, I'm ready to help.

traceroute6 www.ipv6.sltnet.lk
traceroute to ipv6.sltnet.lk (2402:d000:cafe::1) from 2002:7be7:525b:1::1a8, 30 hops max, 16 byte packets

Btw, I'm interested in getting a /64 subnet for my self. Would it be possible without switching to SLT broadband?

Dear Mohanjith,
Right now SLT provides IPv6 addresses to SLT customers only. However you can get your own alocation with a tunnel broker like Hurricane Electric. try the below url http://tunnelbroker.net

Dear Mohanjith,
Your trace seems to be stopping at Sprint 6t04 IP 2002:d013:df1e::1 (=208.19.223.30) which is your operators uplink.

I just tried to ping www.ipv6.sltnet.lk and www6.learn.ac.lk it was success. Looks like the routing issue is resolved now.

Thanks for all the help.

So if a apply for Ipv6 service, will it be a problem for normal internet browsing?

aselag said...

When DNS resolves to both IPv6 & v4 addresses, usually IPv6 address will be preferred in most Operating Systems (ex. Windows, Linux). see our url http://www.ipv6.sltnet.lk/know8-faq.html for more details.

You will usually be on Dual-Stack PC (both IPv4 & v6 available) and your usual IPv4 internet is always available for you.

Linux prefer IPv6 but not windows XP. Starting from vista and aboue are ok.

Also dialog has a ipv6 site too,
www.ipv6.dialog.lk

I use WindowsXP. It prefers IPv6 over IPv4 by default. So do Vista & Win7. Check it out >> http://ipv6int.net/systems/windows_xp-ipv6.html

I also saw dialog ipv6 site coming up. Thats very good news. Today dialog site seems to have a DNS issue. Could access the site earlier(did not check if it was via ipv6 or v4).

ipv6 requirement will be felt more by mobile operators than others. Especially with 4G in the horizon.

V6-V4 translation is an issue since new services will probably be IPv6 only. What is the preferred translation mechanism used by operators for this translation?

I want to know whether slt use IPv6 for the normal home connections ? if not how can we get it to a home connection ? I've been doing a research on IPV6 and want to test it

SLT Residential ADSL do not have native IPv6 yet. What you could do is connect to a free tunnel broker (http://tunnelbroker.net, http://www.he.net) and get a tunnel connection for your testing. They have all instructions to setup and will also provide your own prefix.

i have adsl office pkg 2mb speed im using iptv ( not a pew tv )channels via above conniction so it is alwyse channels is freezing so if ask for ipv6 from slt did it will help

aselag said...

ipv6 will not help. It should be something to do with network congestion. Also SLT PEO TV and Broadband link do not support ipv6 yet.

aselag said...

Also, to connect to IPTV (over internet), service provider also needs to support ipv6.

Do SLT provide SLT Residential ADSL connections with native IPv6 now ?

aselag said...

SLT does not provide native IPv6 yet for ADSL users.
Also when they provide, you will need a IPv6 Ready ADSL router to receive.
